“WAITING FOR GODOT” is 「ゴドーを待ちながら」in Japanese. This story asks us, “what is waiting”, this word is written at the title. When you see or hear the word, ”waiting”, maybe you associate this word, “stop”. But is this rught? Of course, this is not wrong, but not only this one. For example, you keep waiting for your lover who doesn’t make a promise. This instance is one of the “waiting”. But are there anything else…?
In this story, ESTRAGON says to VLADIMIR, “Let’s go.” But VRADIMIR always answer like this, “No, were waiting for GODOT.” I think they are representative of human life. People are always waiting for something. Are there any situations when you are waiting for nothing? For example, now I am taking a English exam, and I think, “I want go home early.” I am waiting for the course of time. Even when I am sleeping, I am waiting for sunrise. But at that time, do we stop? No, we keep going on for the thing which is waiting for me. People have to “go” for “a waiting thing”.
While people keep living, how many times you think, “If I die, I’ll free from painful life….” Maybe some people say, “I have never thought such a thing!!” But at least, some time I think such a thing. When I was a candidate, I couldn’t get good grades I studied harder and harder, but my grades didn’t become good. I felt so sad, so I thought I want to die. Now, however, I am living. Why? Because I have a “thing which waited foe me.” Many pleasant times at university. “waiting things” are GODOT. VRADIMIR and ESTRAGON are living for GODOT. When they tried to hang from a bough, if there were no existence like GODOT, one of them died. Why they stopped hanging from a bough? To ask GODOT that they should hang or not. That is to say, VRADIMIR and ESTRAGON are symbol of human life which always need a “waiting thing”, and GODOT is image of a “waiting thing.”
VRADIMIR and ESTRAGON had words with each other over the time when GODOT will come, and the place where GODOT will come. I think, they are the symbols of two ideas, the one is “a heart which is waiting with believing, and the other is “a heart which is despairing”
When VRADIMIR and ESTRAGON thought GODOT came at last, they were so scared. This is a fear of losing a goal. People will look for a new goal when they could achieve their aims. Losing a goal is equal to losing a hope. VRADIMIR and ESTRAGON was scared by the fear of loosing the goal which they have to wait for GODOT, maybe.
The appearance of POZZO and LUCKY is necessary for this story. When people are going on for a waiting things, there are always some obstacles or disappointments. But we can confirm the thing’s importance again with them. POZZO is the emblem of a obstacle, and LUCKY is the emblem of disappointments.
